Plantar Fasciitis (plan?t r fash e ?it?is) / Heel Pain Syndrome is one of our most commonly treated foot problems. Sometimes diagnosed as a heel spur, or heel spur syndrome, this condition is more accurately referred to as "heel pain syndrome."
What Causes Plantar FasciitisPlantar fascia is a band of fibrous tissue that runs the entire length of the bottom (plantar surface) of the foot, beginning at the heel bone (calcaneus) and extending to the base of the toes (metatarsal joints). See diagram. The purpose of the plantar fascia tissue is to maintain or support the integrity of the longitudinal arch.
Plantar Fasciitis is an overuse injury. Excessive stretching of the plantar fascia casuses the tissue to become inflamed, enabling the tiny micro fibers to tear. The body then tries to protect this area by plastering the fascia with calcium. This, in turn, is how a heel spur can form. The calcium forms a fish hook-like spur on the base of the heel bone in an attempt to maintain its connection with the fascia tissue ... hence ... a heel spur or heel pain diagnosis. Conditions That Contribute to Plantar Fasciitis or Heel Pain Syndrome
Interestingly enough, women are at a greater risk for developing Plantar Fasciitis than men.

Try Our Heel Pain Therapy Package
1. Select any New Balance shoe with ABZORB® in the heel for extra shock absorbtion. Our New Balance Product Specialists can assist you in this important process.
2. Try the Ultra Arch Support (IAS3710) to reduce strain on the fascia tissue by maintaining arch definition.
3. Wear the 801 slide, available in women's and men's sizes. Use the shoe as a slipper, or to supplement other footwear options to insure you do not walk barefoot while suffering from PF. The exercise your feet receive through your arch and toe areas while wearing the backless 801 actually strengthens the fascia tissue, thereby relieving symptoms and expediting recovery.
